Zero star review. When Venmo doesn't work it REALLY doesn't work. My bank says it is a Venmo issue, but Venmo support was unable to resolve the error messages and repeatedly declined transaction. Be careful! The app requires mandatory back up payment methods (insulting and security compromising) so you don't even have the choice of only revealing one account. They give business relationships higher priority than individuals (e.g., I had to call Venmo to remove Doordash that had attached itself to one of my cards, because I couldn't remove them myself!). The final straw is that the computer (AI?) is in control and Venmo reps admitted that not only were they powerless to override a "security flag" that had attached itself to my account, they were also unable to see its origin. In other words, THEY DON'T KNOW WHY IT ISN'T WORKING, and when I asked whether a manager could find the problem I was told they wouldn't be able to see it either. If you don't mind that you (or anyone at Venmo) have no control over computer glitches or definitions that are regulating your financial transactions, and that they CANNOT BE OVERRIDDEN BY A HUMAN then you will carry on with Venmo's app and computer at your own risk. If you do care about this breach of security oversight by Venmo, and are concerned that any number of minor issues could derail the system, and have little confidence in the company's priorities, you will probably want to do the same thing I just did and delete the app and close the financial accounts associated with it. (They will hold the records for 10 years, but its closure is the best I can do to exert some agency with venmo.)
Account onboarding is complicated.

8 months later and I still cannot pay using Venmo balance. Payment is done via my bank. Verification still says we will get back to you in 2-3 days. How is s this onboarding crap even possible. Useless to be honest. Don’t know why people just don’t use Zelle. Straight forward and is from your bank. No need for this middleman. It is all instant. I don’t get Venmo other than the posh morons who say “I’ll Venmo you”. Trying to sound trendy. Boy, we have stupid people. Only signed up to this as person I know refused to use Zelle. Even though it is much easier than this, there are no fees, no need to wait 1-3 days and requires no verification as it is ur bank. It was already verify. Whatever. Enough venting. This service is bogus.
Wrong Info is Handy

For whatever reason, opening the app let’s me see the memo on payments between friends and strangers, as if I want to see that John H. paid Michell R. for catfood; as if anybody wants to know that. At the same time, going to my own transactions to check whether I paid a bill or not is extremely cumbersome. Not only are the memos hidden, but clicking on a transaction often takes me to the profile of the payee. Other times it opens the payment and shows the memo, but going back to the list of transactions sends me to the top of the list, requiring more scrolling and searching and wasting time. I’d like to see the necessary info easily and the unnecessary info only if I’m looking for it. The opposite is the case with Venmo.

So frustrating when a payment gets declined and there are no issues with funds being avail or an alert on the banks side and venmo says the acct on their side looks ok and it was something triggered by automatic security but there is absolutely no one who can override it!! How does that make any sense? It’s been aver 24hrs and it’s still happening! Happens with every payment I try to every acct I try and even through the website. No one can even explain why it happened or how long it may take for it to get corrected. It’s great when it works but when you run into a situation like this an no one can provide answers or a solution it’s so incredibly frustrating!!!

I linked a debit card and made a $1 transaction. It worked. Anything else I have tried since then (a couple of dozen times) has been declined. I checked with the bank and they were not blocking anything. I chatted with Venmo support and got told to keep trying and have the money requested instead of sending it. Eventually I called support and they say it is a temporary hold, for my security. No indication when it will lift and no manual override. Support has proven to be incapable of getting their own service to work even one time after it worked the first time.

Literally were passive aggressive and so mean about an issue that was pivotal in me being able to pay rent (or not). The person ignored what i was telling them and told me my issue was resolved when it wasn’t and then abruptly left our chat mid conversation. they said they can’t tell me why a payment is being declined, it’s something hidden within the algorithm and there’s nothing they can do about it or even tell me how to fix. seems sketchy and not very secure. they were only rude and condescending. PayPal customer service just as bad.
Cancel Payment

Venmo makes it real difficult to cancel a payment. I have been trying since 9 o’clock this morning and it is now 4:38 PM with no resolution after providing Venmo support with all the information asked of me also, there was no one live to talk to after I sent my number to be called back they need to update their system to provide cancellation. I sent the money to the wrong individual and I requested it back and they haven’t sent it back and I declined to need help ASAP.

Had to create a new account after too many times of my account being locked up unable to do transfers or send money. Now old account can’t be recovered or any of the payments sent. New account was frozen after 1 transaction for an unknown reason that no csr can seem to help with. Account has been locked for 2 months even after multiple attempts to verify it. Even though there’s money still needing to be transferred from it. Venmo clearly likes to steal peoples money

I was notified by a phone number from Venmo a week and a half ago. That someone in Los Angeles was trying to hack into my Venmo account. Venmo has suspended my account because of this possible hack. I have reached out by phone calls, emails text messages and also through the support center. Numerous times still no feedback on getting an answer of when they are in a lift my suspension of my Venmo account so I can use my account!! Horrible service!!!

I did refer people in the beginning now im taking my time. We are lay people not IT people your system is no good and hard to understand Zelle is better and easy consumers should know and soon or later they will understand since there are so many social medias for information gathering. Why you get money from my checking account when I put Maser card on file with Über and now you don’t get the money for others ????
